However, this strange looking wedge, perched on the North Yorkshire Moors is in fact RAF Fylingdales. The not so secret RADAR Base is also part of the Ballistic Missile Early Warning System in a joint operation with the US Military.
Construction on the site started back in 1962 with the base becoming operational the following year, a time some would describe as the height of the ‘Cold War‘. The Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962 ensured that nuclear war as well as intercontinental missiles were at the forefront of peoples’ minds.
RAF Fylingdales remains very much in the sight of campaign groups such as CND whose Yorkshire group have organised protests at the base as recently as last month, which was also attended by a Green Party Councillor (as reported by the York Press).
Whilst the operations inside the base remain secretive, there is no missing it whether you drive north or south along the A169.
