Two days after the awful avalanche disaster in Italy, we get some great news that eight people have been found alive in a hotel.
Rescue services have pulled eight people, who by any other measure would have died of exposure, from the Rigopiano Hotel, in the Abruzzo region of Italy.
It is a testament to the professionalism of the rescue teams at the scene and speaks volumes about the human instinct to survive. The fact that two children are amongst the survivors only sweetens the news.
It is believed that the earthquakes on Wednesday, combined with heavy snowfall in the area were both contributory factors in the avalanche. Unfortunately, four bodies have already been recovered in the rescue effort and at the time of the avalanche, it was thought that up to thirty people were missing.
Let’s hope the energy level of the rescue teams remains high and rescuers can be rotated in and out of the search as required.
Spare a thought for those who are still yet to be found.
